NEW: As of September 2018, I've added a few new budget-friendly options. Scroll down to read more about them.
Substantive Edit. This is a macro edit that includes an analysis of plot, story structure, tone, voice, pacing, dialogue, character motivation, characterization, authenticity/believability, tension, POV, flow, etc. It includes comments and suggested "in-line" changes tracked in the text (using MS Word’s Track Changes feature), as well as an editorial letter summarizing your strengths and weaknesses (often with examples from the text). I’m a firm believer that it’s just as important to know your strengths as it is to know your weaknesses.
Time frame: 4-6 weeks
Rate: $4.00 per page
Line Edit. This is a micro edit that includes an analysis of sentence structure, consistency, word choice, style, grammar, etc.
Time frame: 14-30 days
Rate: $3.25 per page
Proofread. This one is fairly self-explanatory. I’ll proofread the manuscript, which means I look at grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. I follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
Time frame: 10-21 days
Rate: $2.00 per page
Read Report. I’ll read the manuscript and prepare an editorial letter detailing your strengths and weaknesses, what works and what doesn’t. I will make no marks or comments in the manuscript itself.
Rate: 50k – 75k words: $500.00 / 76k – 90k words: $600.00 (Email me for pricing if your manuscript is less than 50k words or more than 90k words.)
Submission Packet. A critique of your query, synopsis (2-4 pages), and first chapter (up to 15 pages).
Rate: $75

*I’ve wanted to add a budget-friendly, “mini-edit” option to my list of services for a while now. The challenge is, of course, that edits are inherently time-consuming. For example, my typical pace for a line edit is 8-12 pages per hour, which means a 75k-word manuscript can easily take 25 hours or more. Substantive edits usually require more time, partly because I also include an edit letter that details the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses. I love writing edit letters, and maybe it shows because those letters are usually in the range of 7 - 14 pages. So how to add more budget-friendly options without sacrificing quality? Well, talking takes a lot less time than writing, so I figured we’d start there. I may tweak these packages over the coming months depending on how they go. We'll see. Also, I should probably note that the "45-60 minute phone consultation" is not limited to that time frame. These may be shorter (doubtful) or longer, depending on the manuscript and how much there is to discuss, in terms of both strengths and weaknesses. Basically I wanted to include an estimate of time, but it's not a hard and fast rule.
